Belated intro

What qualifies me to tell you anything at all about web design?

I am a professional web designer. I’m not a freelancer, though, so I’m not out to make my paycheck — or in fact any money at all — off authors. I’m a full-time in-house webmaster for a university, where I manage 8-10 sites more or less on my own. I used to do some work on the side, but I’ve stopped because it eats into my writing time.

It absolutely baffles me that authors are so badly educated about web design and hosting when they’re going to need these services every bit as much as publishing and agenting. So I’m rambling. I should probably take this opportunity to invoke McIntyre’s First Law: Under the right circumstances, anything I tell you could be wrong.

I’m addicted to the NYTimes maps this morning, especially the county bubble view. Hello, population distribution! It’s fascinating to compare this year to 2004.
